Honor’s new product is a MagicBook Pro frameless notebook based on an AMD Ryzen 5 3550H processor, equipped with 8 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD and a Radeon Vega 8 graphics card. We’ll tell you more about the features.
laptops is as wide as narrow: it is not always possible to choose a laptop within the required budget and with suitable characteristics. Therefore, it was not easy for us to find a competitor for the Honor MagicBook Pro with similar characteristics: there were always some “buts” in terms of the diagonal, price, or set of parameters. In the end, we decided to compare it with the Lenovo ThinkPad E595.

The package for the new Honor laptop is ascetic: only a USB Type-C cable and a network charger with fast charging function.
The Honor MagicBook Pro looks solid because of its chopped forms and the Space Gray aluminum alloy case (no matter how prosaic this may sound). Despite the strict outlines, the corners of the structure are rounded, and the edges are processed in such a way that the use and transportation of new items does not cause trouble.
The upper half of the device is relatively flat and the lower half is wedge-shaped to improve ergonomics. We only conditionally called the parts of the case halves, in fact, the top cover is almost twice thinner than the base. The weight of the new product is 1.7 kilograms, which is more than acceptable with the current screen diagonal and body materials. The laptop can even be called lightweight compared to other models with 15.6 or 16-inch screens.
Despite the fact that aluminum dominates the body materials, the connecting hinge, the display bezel and the touchpad keys are made of plastic. At the same time, the assembly is solid, practically does not cause complaints. In practice – only because opening the case with one hand is not easy and, despite the wide opening angle, the top cover may rattle when tilted. Otherwise, all elements are fitted to each other without any flaws.
The screen is without a touchscreen, but rather bright and with good viewing angles close to maximum. The picture is clear enough and comfortable both for working with text and for watching videos. Interestingly, there is no webcam and microphone either above or below the screen. This is done to save space and maximize the use of the cover under the screen. Between the F6 and F7 keys, approximately on the central axis of the laptop, there is a mechanical button, under which a webcam with an operation indicator is hidden. A light press – and the lens rises from the slide. The technology elegantly solves the problem of installing the camera in the display frame. However, with this arrangement of the lens, your perspective for the interlocutor is not the most advantageous.
The lower inner panel of the case is reserved for a keyboard block with a touchpad and stereo speakers, the right of which is neatly inscribed in the power key with a built-in fingerprint scanner.
The keyboard unit is familiar to laptops: we have an island type, seven lines of keys, where the top one is functional, half the rest, as well as the up and down scroll buttons. The key travel is moderate, but comfortable: according to tradition, we wrote the material directly on the MagicBook Pro keyboard and were satisfied with the interaction both in terms of typing, stroke, letter spacing, and delicate highlighting of the entire block.
The touchpad of the novelty is large, mechanical, without separation into component blocks and with the support of multiple touches. This control is able to replace the external manipulator, but in terms of ergonomics, we would put it four there is still some inconsistency in the actions. To the right of the touchpad is a Magic Link sticker technology for instant data transfer from compatible smartphones via NFC (works with Honor and Huawei Android devices).
The left end of the case contains an output to an external monitor or projector, a classic USB-A connector and a modern USB Type-C. It is interesting that the latter can be used both for charging the laptop itself, and for charging / synchronizing external devices, such as smartphones. On the right side, everything is more prosaic: two familiar USB-A and a combined audio jack for a headset.
The laptop has a powerful 56 Wh battery, which the user does not have access to. The battery life of the new product is impressive: in office mode with Wi-Fi connected, you can expect up to 15 hours of continuous operation, and watching a video at 80% brightness will drain the battery in about 10 hours. The included 65 W AC charger is extremely compact for transportation. Thanks to the SuperCharge fast charging function, the laptop charges from zero to 100% a little more than an hour.
Honor MagicBook Pro left behind only a pleasant experience. Yes, of course, there are drawbacks in the face of the not so-responsive touchpad and the camera angle of shooting a webcam, but they are lost against the background of the existing advantages of a laptop – which only comes with quick charging and a frameless display.
Also among the advantages of the model: a relatively compact metal case, a convenient keyboard and fingerprint scanner, an impressive battery life. Yes, this is not a design or multimedia solution, but for office tasks and even working with simple graphics, the novelty is great. The official price of the Honor MagicBook Pro laptop is 799$.
